A float switch is a device used to sense the level of liquid within a tank, it may actuate a pump, an indicator, an alarm, or other devices.

Use them with hydroponics, saltwater tank, freshwater tank, gardening, aquariums for power head control, pet bowls, fish tanks, filtration, heating, pumps, ponds, basement alarms, boats, air condition drain pans, pressure washers, carpet cleaning machine, reef aquarium, fluid control, ice machines, coffee pots, marine, automotive, automobiles, tropical fish tanks, evaporator coils, condensation line, in relays, or whatever your project may be.

It can be easily converted from normally open to normally close by inverting the float.

How Magnetic Reed Liquid Level Sensors Work:-

A float switch's purpose is to allow or deny access to a circuit depending on the liquid level. Most float switches "normally close" meaning that the wires from the top of the switch are used to complete a circuit when it reaches its lowest point. They rest on the bottom clip or stop, for example when a tank has dried.

A magnetic reed switch is used to open and close float switches. The reed is enclosed in a glass tube that is cemented into a stainless steel stem with epoxy. This illustration shows how a magnet can be used as a switch to open or close circuits by moving closer or further away from a reed.

The magnet will touch the contacts if it is close enough. Current can pass through them if they touch. The contacts become demagnetized and break the circuit if the magnet is removed.

A float switch has a magnetic reed switch that is hermetically sealed within a stem. Most often, this stem is made of plastic or stainless steel. A magnet is enclosed in the float. The magnet moves along the length of the stem when a fluid level rises or falls.

The contacts of the encased Reed Switch are touched by the magnet and the magnet draws together the circuit.

You can reverse the operation by taking the bottom clip off the switch, inverting and replacing the clip. After this operation is completed, the switch circuit will remain open when the floating float rests on the bottom clip and close when it rises.

If properly used, float switches are capable of providing millions of on/off cycles for years of reliable operation. Overloading is the most common reason for failures, which are often caused by spike voltage. Be sure to review our Technical Page on Spiking Voltage & Float Switches before designing a circuit that uses a float switching device.
